AS Level Psychology 9990
The Syllabus of AS Level Psychology 9990:
The Cambridge International AS Level Psychology 9990 syllabus covers four psychological approaches illustrated through twelve core studies, plus comprehensive research methodology training. The AS Level requires approximately 180 guided learning hours across one academic year. No previous study of psychology is expected. Examinations are available in the June and November series worldwide and the March series in India. The syllabus is valid for examinations in 2027.
- Biological Approach: the assumption that behaviour, cognitions, and emotions can be explained by brain function, hormones, genetics, and evolution. Core studies: Dement and Kleitman investigating the relationship between REM sleep and dreaming using EEG recordings, Hassett et al. examining sex differences in monkey toy preferences using behavioural observation, and Hölzel et al. investigating how mindfulness meditation changes brain structure using MRI scans and longitudinal design.
- Cognitive Approach: the assumption that information is processed through input, processing, and output stages like a computer. Core studies: Andrade testing whether doodling improves concentration and memory retention in a laboratory experiment, Baron-Cohen et al. investigating theory of mind deficits using the reading the mind in the eyes test with participants on the autism spectrum, and Pozzulo et al. examining children and adults' accuracy in eyewitness identification using line-up experiments.
- Learning Approach: the assumption that behaviour is shaped by the environment through classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and social learning. Core studies: Bandura et al. testing whether children imitate aggressive behaviour observed in adults through social learning, Fagen et al. investigating positive reinforcement training effectiveness in working elephants using behavioural observation, and Saavedra and Silverman treating a child's button phobia through classical conditioning techniques.
- Social Approach: the assumption that behaviour is influenced by social contexts, environments, and the actual, implied, or imagined presence of others. Core studies: Milgram investigating the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience in a laboratory setting, Perry et al. investigating personal space with focus on empathy and oxytocin effects, and Piliavin et al. testing bystander helping behaviour in a real-world New York subway field experiment.
- Research Methods: experiments (laboratory and field), self-reports (questionnaires and interviews), case studies, observations (overt, covert, participant, non-participant, naturalistic, controlled), correlations (positive, negative, strength), longitudinal studies, hypotheses (null, alternative, directional, non-directional), variables (independent, dependent), sampling (opportunity, random, volunteer), ethics (informed consent, right to withdraw, confidentiality, debriefing), validity (ecological, demand characteristics, generalisability), reliability (inter-rater, test-retest), and data analysis (measures of central tendency, measures of spread, graphical representations).
Assessment consists of two externally examined papers totalling 120 marks: Paper 1 covers approaches, issues and debates through Section A with short answer questions on core studies worth 38 marks and Section B with extended response and essay questions worth 22 marks, and Paper 2 covers research methods through Section A with short answer and scenario-based questions worth 46 marks and Section B with a planning question worth 14 marks. Each paper lasts one hour thirty minutes. The assessment objectives weight knowledge and understanding at 35 percent, application at 35 percent, and analysis and evaluation at 30 percent. I was struggling with the Paper 1 essays because I could describe each core study accurately but I did not know how to link the studies to the issues and debates or how to evaluate the research beyond saying it was a laboratory experiment or a case study. Professor K taught me a method for every essay where I would first identify which issue or debate the question was testing, then select two or three studies that illustrated different sides of that debate, and then evaluate each study by discussing its methodology, ethics, and generalisability before reaching a balanced conclusion. He was also extremely helpful with Paper 2 because he showed me how to read a research scenario and immediately identify the independent and dependent variables, the sampling method, and the ethical issues, and then write answers that applied my research methods knowledge to that specific scenario rather than giving generic textbook definitions. The planning question in Section B went from being my weakest area to my strongest because he taught me to justify every methodological choice by linking it to the scenario. I achieved grade A and the structured approach he taught me for linking studies to issues and debates was the single change that made the difference.
