ACT Science
The ACT Science section measures interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required in the natural sciences, covering biology, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, and physics. The section presents 40 multiple-choice questions across seven passages to be completed in 40 minutes, giving students approximately 60 seconds per question. The ACT Science section is optional and does not factor into the composite score, though it is reported separately on the 1 to 36 scale and contributes to a STEM score that averages Mathematics and Science results. Passages appear in three formats: Data Representation at 25 to 35 percent, Research Summaries at 45 to 60 percent, and Conflicting Viewpoints at 15 to 20 percent, and calculator use is not permitted during this section.
Format
The ACT Science section is taken online and presents 40 multiple-choice questions across seven passages to be completed within 40 minutes, with each question offering four answer choices and approximately 60 seconds of working time per item. As an optional section on the ACT, the Science score is reported separately and does not factor into the composite, and a paper-based version is also available for students testing within the United States.
